Nouveau Paris monumental

Cette carte touristique de Paris éditée pour l'Exposition universelle de 1889, centenaire de la Révolution française boycotté par les monarchies du temps mais plébiscité par 28 millions de visiteurs, met sur le même plan monuments permanents « classiques » et bâtiments censément temporaires érigés pour cette occasion ou pour les expositions précédentes. Le plus célèbre d'entre eux, la tour Eiffel, alors cernée de pavillons d'exposition sur le Champ-de-Mars et le Trocadéro, est resté le monument le plus élevé du monde pendant quarante ans.

This tourist map of Paris published for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, the centenary of the French Revolution - boycotted by the monarchies of the time but acclaimed by 28 million visitors - places on the same level « classic » permanent monuments and supposedly temporary buildings erected for this occasion or for previous exhibitions. The most famous of them, the Eiffel Tower, then surrounded by exhibition pavilions on the Champ-de-Mars and the Trocadéro, remained the highest monument in the world for forty years.
