Ce premier volume de la nouvelle série intitulée Cyrrhus, est consacré aux fouilles de la mission française et, plus particulièrement, aux travaux menés sur le théâtre entre 1952 et 1993. La mission, dirigée par Edmond Frézouls, s'est en effet particulièrement employée au dégagement de l'édifice de spectacles, daté par le fouilleur de la deuxième moitié du II^e siècle de notre ère.

Cette publication s'articule en trois chapitres :

L'introduction présente la mission dans son ensemble, selon un déroulement chronologique. Suivent ensuite les deux premiers chapitres, de la main d'Edmond Frézouls, sur l'histoire de Cyrrhus et de la Syrie du Nord d'une part, sur le théâtre d'autre part. Le troisième et dernier chapitre expose les recherches récentes de la mission libano-syrienne de Cyrrhus sur l'édifice, tout en publiant l'ancienne documentation et le matériel archéologique découvert par l'ancienne mission. Ces nouvelles recherches annoncent également la réalisation d'une prochaine publication sur le théâtre, comprenant les études archéologique et architecturale, ainsi que la présentation du projet de mise en valeur que la mission libano-syrienne engage sur cet édifice.

Les archives écrites des anciennes fouilles, utilisées pour la réalisation de ce volume, sont issues de la documentation administrative conservée à la DGAMS et à l'Ifpo, ainsi que des archives personnelles d'Edmond Frézouls ; les illustrations graphiques et photographiques (sauf mention contraire) proviennent des archives de la mission française (archives personnelles d'Edmond Frézouls et documents conservés à l'IRAA).

This first volume of the new series titled Cyrrhus, is dedicated to the excavations of the French mission, particularly to the work done on the theater between 1952 and 1993. The mission, led by Edmond Frézouls, focused its excavation work on the theater, which was dated to the second half of the second century AD by the excavator himself.

This publication is divided into three chapters :

The introduction presents the entire work of the mission in a chronological order. The next two chapters are written by Edmond Frézouls on the history of Cyrrhus and Northern Syria as well as the history of the theater. The third and last chapter discusses the recent researches done by the Lebanese-Syrian mission of Cyrrhus on the theater while referencing the old documentation and the archaeological material found by the previous (older) mission. New researches and observations are also included in this volume which will be the starting point for a new publication that will encompass the new data on the theater and on the project as a whole.

The written archives of the previous excavations that were used in the production of this volume were taken from the administrative documentation of DGAMS and the Ifpo. The personal archives of Edmond Frézouls were also used. Unless otherwise stated, the graphs, the illustrations and the photographies in the entire volume are taken from the archives of the French mission (i.e. personal archives of Edmond Frézouls as well as documents preserved at the IRAA).
