Au lendemain même du Jour J, les Britanniques commencent à installer devant quatre communes normandes, tel un Meccano géant, des installations portuaires équivalentes à celles du port de Douvres. Le but ? Débarquer des milliers de combattants, avec armes, vivres et bagages, en attendant de pouvoir remettre en état le port de Cherbourg ruiné par les Allemands.

The British began the construction of port facilities-as if they were a gigantic Meccano game-immediately following D-Day. The harbour, situated off four different towns, would be comparable to the port of Dover. The objective ? To land thousands of troops with arms, supplies and material while waiting for the repair of Cherbourg harbour, destroyed by the Germans.
In less than 100 pages, historian Gérard Fournier provides a broad view of the Arromanches temporary harbour. Without omitting preceding and following events, he guides the reader through the construction of a marvellous feat of engineering and technology, code name : Mulberry B.
