Les Îles - réelles, artificielles et métaphoriques - ont toujours été fascinantes. Mises en évidence par leur isolation, les constructions contemporaines à proximité de l'eau, voire sur l'eau, dépassent les frontières pour créer une architecture insulaire impressionnante, parfois même audacieuse. Comptant une cinquantaine de projets, Îles présente des créations d'architectes reconnus tels que Jean Nouvel, Frank O. Gehry, Renzo Piano, ou Foster + Partners, et propose une découverte fascinante de l'architecture flottante actuelle, future et lointaine.

Les architectes ont toujours été fascinés par l'idée de créer sur l'eau ou à proximité. Pour la première fois, 47 projets contemporains réalisés dans le monde entier sont rassemblés ici en un seul volume. Les sept chapitres abordent les différentes applications de « l'architecture flottante », aussi bien à des appartements modestes qu'à des plans directeurs plus ambitieux pour de nouvelles villes.

Le premier chapitre est consacré aux « Bâtiments flottants », des exemples très innovants d'architecture sur l'eau. Suivent ensuite les « Îles de culture » telles que les musées, opéras, théâtres, les « Villas, maisons et appartements » et les « Complexes hôteliers flottants ». Les chapitres traitant des « Îles artificielles » et des « Villes flottantes » se concentrent sur des projets à plus grande échelle, dans le monde entier. Enfin, le dernier chapitre « Un avenir sur l'eau » présente des plans de constructions futures.

Parmi les architectes se trouvent les plus grands - Zaha Hadid, Foster + Partners, Jean Nouvel, I.M. Pei, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando -, comme les plus jeunes issus de nouveaux cabinets émergents - MAD, Mark Dziewulski Architect, Phu Hoang Office, Vo Trong Nghia.
