Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. It is also known as high blood pressure. It does not have any known symptoms. It is considered a primary risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral arterial disease, vision loss, chronic kidney disease and dementia. Hypertension can be categorized into two types. These are primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is common and caused due to genetic and lifestyle factors such as excess salt intake, obesity, smoking and alcohol use. Risk factors for secondary hypertension include chronic kidney diseases, narrowing of kidney arteries and use of birth control pills. Diagnosis of high blood pressure is done through the use of accurate blood measurement instruments. Its treatment includes the use of antihypertensive agents like beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers and renin inhibitors.
