Qu'est-ce que la violence ? Nous avons tous l'intuition de ce dont il s'agit. Qui n'a pas ressenti l'adrénaline, la douleur ou encore la frayeur qu'elle induit ? Un meurtre délibéré, celui de Samuel Paty, ou la tuerie collective à Charlie Hebdo sont considérés comme des manifestations de violence.

Nous ne proposerons pas ici de définition unitaire de la violence, mais nous verrons ce que les sciences mettent derrière ce terme. Au demeurant, parler d'« origine naturelle de la violence » en la renvoyant aux humains et aux autres animaux ne justifie ni ne discrédite la violence. Ce manifeste tente de comprendre d'où vient la violence, mais nullement de la juger.

What is violence ? We can all intuit what it is. Who has not felt the rush of adrenalin, the pain or the fear that it causes ? Deliberate murders, such as the beheading of middle school teacher Samuel Paty or the mass shooting at the headquarters of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in France, are considered manifestations of violence.

Here, we will not propose a single, over-arching definition of violence, rather we will see what the sciences include behind the term. Moreover, when we speak of the « natural origin of violence » in reference to humans and other animals it neither justifies nor discredits violence. This manifesto is an attempt to understand where violence comes from, not to judge it.
