Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are the clinical conditions affecting the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. It consists of the esophagus, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach and intestine. The management and treatment of many of these disorders require surgery. Gastrointestinal surgery can be of two types- upper GI surgery and lower GI surgery. Liver resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy and esophagectomy are upper GI surgeries. Colorectal surgery, colectomy and resections for rectal cancer are lower GI surgeries. Some of the other gastrointestinal surgical procedures are appendectomy, biliopancreatic diversion, enterostomy, gastroplasty, hepatectomy, liver transplantation, pancreatectomy, etc. Appendicitis is a potentially fatal condition if left unresolved, but is easily managed with surgery. A minor procedure called colonoscopy can detect colon cancer at an early stage.
