« Occupez vos mains à filer la laine, gardez les pieds à la maison, et vous serez assez parées » (Tertullien, De cultu feminarum, 2.13). Les parois rocheuses de l'Atlas et du Sahara néolithiques, de trop rares textes anciens, des inscriptions latines innombrables mais partiales et fragmentaires, des monuments figurés et quelques objets permettent, pour peu qu'on s'intéresse à la société africaine ancienne, de restituer des images de femmes, d'approcher leur quotidien dans un monde régi par les mâles. Elles sont concubines, épouses, mères, nourrices, courtisanes, esclaves ou domestiques, mais aussi, dans un milieu foncièrement hostile, archères, artistes, pédagogues, patronnes.

Looking at the ancient African society, the Neolithic Atlas and Sahara rock walls, too few ancient texts, innumerable but partial and fragmentary Latin inscriptions, figurative monuments and some objects allow us to get images of women, to approach their daily lives in a male dominated society. They are concubines, wives, mothers, nurses, courtesans, slaves or servants, but also, in a fundamentally hostile environment, archers, artists, pedagogues, patrons.
