A moving book about the daily life of the residents of Ons Erf and De Waaiberg. 'Ons Erf' (Our yard) and 'De Waaiberg' (Windy Hill) are service-centres for adolescent and adult handicapped people. They were set up by the Province of West-Flanders. To their residents they offer a suitable living-context, with the required amount of space, quietude and protection. At the same time these centres allow the residents to open up to and be involved in society at large. Though being vulnerable and powerless in many ways, the residents are at the same time quite extraordinary and humanely authentic. As a winding up of the European Year of Handicapped People, these institutes want to come out of the shadows through the publication of this book. Eyewitness is an attempt to touch the outside world with the 'touched' life. Through his images Norbert Maes allows us to catch a glimpse of daily life among the residents of 'Ons Erf' and 'De Waaiberg'. Peter Theunynck through his reflections and poetry puts into words the unique existence of these unique people.
