Isabella de Montey, favorite of King Francis I, is accused of witchcraft and conspiracy against the crowned lover. The woman (and she is pregnant) is subject to an inquisitorial investigation and regulated torture. She gives birth to a child, unable to withstand the torture, cursing the king and his new mistress, the Countess of Chateaubriand. The birth is taken by the executioner Guillaume Chaperon. Inquisitor Henri Dengon orders the executioner to take care of the newborn boy.
Over time, the executioner's son Rene grows up, begins to show unusual abilities. He senses evil spirits. When Rene turns ten, he enters the service at the monastery of St. Dominic. This monastery is headed by Inquisitor Henri Dengon, who led the investigation into the case of the Marquise, Rene's mother.
A werewolf appears in the city of Cholet, which terrifies the entire district. Rene decides to find out: how to save a man who turns into a werewolf? He successfully does it with the help of a special device.
Many years pass. Henri Dengon becomes Chief Inquisitor of the Kingdom and leaves the monastery of Saint Dominic. Rene receives the status of Prelate, which is confirmed by Bull, a special document with the seal of the Pope. This document confirms the special mission of the young Prelate.
After constant travels in France, caused by the direct duties of the Prelate, Rene meets Professor Fernando Sigüenza. Rene and Fernando head to Cholet together and stay at the local monastery where Rene spent his youth. In the monastery, he notices strange things. Finally, he clearly understands that in the monastery there is not a single cross, a symbol of faith, including on monks.
The ghost of Isabella de Montey comes to him and tells about what happened many years ago. The Abbot of the monastery shows Rene the protocol of the interrogation of the Marquise, hoping thereby to win him over to his side. The devil worshipers intend to transfer the soul of the Marquise to the body of the abducted Countess de Oloron. For this they intend to use the alchemical knowledge of the professor. Rene, sword in hands, confronts the devil-worshiping monks. He inherited this sword from his adoptive father, the executioner. The sword has a flaming blade and the guard of the sword is sealed with a magical seal. Rene rescues the Countess and accompanies the lady to her fiancé's castle.
After that, he goes to the Chief Inquisitor Henri Dengon, but finds him already dead.
Rene is forced to flee. Rene discovers that he wields the sword of the demon Gaborim, which is endowed with fantastic power. The seal that can be seen on the guard of the sword says that this sword was forged in another world. Professor Sigüenza forges documents for Rene. The young Prelate receives a new name: Spanish Baron Rene Alvarez di Calahorra.
Rene also learns that the king has a new favorite, Countess Eleanor de Oloron, and the king literally lost his head from her. The Prelate realizes that the Marquise de Montey is close to the goal: she will become a queen and will rule alone. After all, her rebellious unavenged spirit dwells in the Countess's body.
Rene fights the demoness and wins; the restless soul of the Marquise leaves the body of Eleanor. Gaborim, the master of the sword, appears unexpectedly. From now on, the sword will be kept where it was forged. Rene is disappointed with life and his real father, the king. He can no longer stay in France, Spain awaits him.
