Dans l'Antiquité, Pline l'Ancien racontait que les pics de chaleur étaient provoqués par l'étoile Canicule - la petite chienne en latin - aujourd'hui appelée Sinus.

On pensait que l'astre déclenchait trente jours de fortes chaleurs car il se lève et se couche en même temps que le soleil du 22 juillet au 22 août. Aujourd'hui, les vagues de chaleur dépassent allègrement cette période de trente jours et se moquent du mouvement des astres : elles sont devenues notre désastre.

J'imaginais moi aussi que ma canicule allait naturellement se dissiper vers mes trente ans. Pourtant, j'écris encore ma chronique de la petite chienne.

In ancient times, Pliny the Elder said that heatwaves were caused by the star Canicula (from the Latin canicula, meaning small dog), which is now known as Sirius or the Dog Star.

It was once thought that the star triggered 30 days of intense heat because it rises and sets at the same time as the sun from 22 July to 22 August. Today, the heat waves blithely exceed this period of 30 days and don't care about the movement of the stars : they have become our disaster.

I too once imagined that my heatwave would naturally dissipate after my 30th birthday. Yet, here I am, chronicling my dog days.
